NEW! AIA Continuing Education: LED Life Specifications Explained

Life ratings for SSL devices are often boiled down to a lumen maintenance (L70) level at a defined time. This specification applies only to the LED’s as measured by the chip’s manufacturer. This seminar will explore IES TM21 and explain how LED chip manufacturers generate life ratings. We will also ask the question is there more to an LED lamp or luminaire life rating than only considering the chips themselves? Three other IES standards will also be looked at briefly in this training; LM80, LM79 and LM84. Product reliability is of great interest. The presentation will end with an exploration of Accelerated Stress Testing as a way the industry is addressing the shortfall of using only chip data to represent lamp and luminaire life ratings.

Learning Objective 1:
Gain a deeper knowledge of IES National Standards (TM21, LM79, LM80, LM84)

Learning Objective 2:
Deep dive into Mortality Curves; Traditional versus SSL Sources referencing IES-TM-21

Learning Objective 3:
Life ratings are not what they may appear to be. Understanding a product’s Reported versus Projected Life Rating will be discussed with examples.

Learning Objective 4:
Testing to pass versus testing to fail is a large differentiator between SSL product manufacturers. Product Reliability: Life and Stress Testing will be presented as a means of identifying reliable products in the market place.

HSW Justification:
Health safety and welfare in a space are correlated to the reliability of the installed light sources. Understanding how LED lamps and luminaires life ratings are created, along with their strengths and weaknesses is an important component in choosing what to specify for an installation.
